YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki Steps Down and Becomes Advisor at Alphabet

Susan Wojcicki has announced that she is stepping down as CEO of YouTube. Her deputy, Neal Mohan, will replace her after she led the world’s largest video site for nine years. In a farewell letter to employees, Wojcicki explained her decision was based on her desire to focus on her family, health, and personal projects.

However, rather than leaving completely, she will become an advisor at Google and Alphabet. Wojcicki has been a part of Google for nearly 25 years, joining the team when founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin started working out of her parents’ garage. She was Google’s marketing manager, co-created Google Image Search, played a role in the creation of AdSense, and encouraged the acquisition of YouTube by Google.

In 2015, the industry recognized Wojcicki’s contributions to advertising and named her “the most important person in advertising”. She will continue to work with some YouTube teams, coach team members, and meet with creators during the transition process.
